Satin Balls

5 lbs ground beef (the fatty kind)
8 eggs with shells
16oz Philadelphia or other cream cheese
4 packets gelatin
1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
1 cup rolled oats
1 jar natural peanut butter
4 Tbsp honey

To that I add a multivitamin crushed and 5 capsules echinacea. I form this into large balls (tennis ball size) and feed raw. You can freeze extras.

Just a side note... echinacea gave Jack really bad diarrhea when we tried to use it when he got kennel cough from one of our fosters. I don't know if that's a common problem or not, but if you notice a problem, try them without the echinacea.

Satin balls are not meant to be a food replacement, nor are they for puppies. They are for sick, convalescing dogs, or emaciated dogs ONLY.

Sorry if I confused someone. I wasn't giving Jack satin balls - just echinaeca to help his immune system with the kennel cough. I was just mentioning it since I saw it was an ingredient in the satin balls recipe.

Hahaha no Cortney, I was speaking to Eddy since he mentioned that his wife could feed this to his pup (sounded like he intended to use this as "food" for a puppy.)

I have a recipe for Satin Balls on my blog that is almost the same, but with a little variation.

  • 5 lbs raw hamburger (the cheapest kind)
  • 1/2 lg box Total Cereal
  • 1/2 lg box Oatmeal
  • 1/2 Jar wheat germ
  • 3/4 cup veg oil
  • 3/4 cup unsulfured molasses
  • 5 raw eggs AND shells
  • 5 envelopes unflavored gelatin
  • pinch of salt

The Total cereal is what bothers me quite a lot (it is sugar laden and can cause GI issues in sick dogs, who Satin Balls are intended for) and many many dogs are allergic to wheat germ, which is why I omit those 2 ingredients.

They are for very fast weight gain and enticing sick dogs to eat that are starving.

PM me with the link to your thread, or with what's going on with Rowdy and we'll see if we can't fix it.

I have this saved as a bookmark and give it out often. Im making some this week just to have as treats! Although for treats I make them golf ball size instead of tennis ball size

What would you consider to be an "age minimum" for satin balls?
