Amelia - Senior Service Dog needs home, urgent!

http://virtualfluffies.com/2011/04/1...-needs-a-home/

I do not have words that I can type here without needing to ban myself to express the rage, impotence and incredible sadness that this makes me feel.

For those who have asked what will happen to Karma when she retires... NOT THIS. She will live the life of a spoiled, pampered pet, and decorate my sofa. Amelia deserves much better than what has been done to her. Please share, crosspost and help find this girl a loving forever home.

She now has a foster home...looks like there has been some interest in adopting, but I guess the first one fell through for some reason.

I have known some folks that abuse the privelege of service dogs, but this absolutely takes the cake. I would like to take a walk over to their house and pay them a little visit!

How could they? Poor baby, I hope someone takes her home and spoils her like she deserves.

I hope those people have children and their children put them in a home when they become "useless"...grrrrr

Poor girl. I do so hope a nice retirement home is found for her soon.

It does make one think though. With so many types of service dogs being trained these days by so many organizations, what plans are there for these dogs when they must retire? I would imagine many become treasured pets as Karma will become but some families can't or don't want to keep more than one dog. Many people might require three or more service dogs through their lifetime so what do these organizations that train and supply these dogs do to help find retirement homes for those dogs?

It's something I just hadn't really thought of until I read about this poor older girl.

In most cases, the retired dogs that came from organizations are offered back to the puppy raisers These organizations also maintain a waiting list of people who sign up specifically to adopt retired SDs, since they will be getting a completely trained and well-behaved older pet.

ETA: article about that as well: http://www.dogsincanada.com/adopting-a-service-dog

That sounds like a great idea, Dana, thanks for letting me know they do this sort of thing. I would imagine a retired SD would make an amazing pet. They've been wonderfully socialized and obedience trained, are used to going into a huge variety of situations calmly, would have years of experience in focusing on their owner and what needs done, used to travelling....really what more could a person want in an adult adoption dog.

How sad that this dog's family just wanted her put down rather than take a little time to find her a good retirement situation. I mean she's 11 for heaven's sake. They must have known for a number of years that her working life was ending so they had more than enough time to search for a good home for her if they couldn't keep her with them. Damn nasty humans!
