Question Swelling reduction times???

Murphy's left bottom lip is very swollen... I am guessing its an allergic reaction to a sting or grass etc?

I took him out for his morning walk and I cant say I'd noticed it before we went out. After he was running around in the filed for a while it became apparent

So I am not 100% sure the swelling happened while we were out..

I gave him antihistamines in hopes it will reduce on its own. he is eating fine & acting normal..no trauma to his gums or face etc

How long do swellings take to go down? After how long should I worry?

When Bella gets stung (and it happens pretty much twice each summer as she stuffs her nose deeply in any flower patch she can find), it usually takes about a full day for the swelling to be completely gone - though you should be seeing a steady reduction in the size and tenderness of the area of course. I always check carefully for stingers still left in her flesh and try to use something cool on the area as well as benadryl orally of course. I've found with her the easiest thing is to wet a facecloth down and then let it freeze slightly. She doesn't like the feel of an icepack but the ice cold facecloth seems more comfy and helps to get that swelling down a bit faster. I just get her to come cuddle on the couch with me and just stroke it over her entire muzzle area slowly and she doesn't seem to mind that so very much (usually you can see it makes the sore area feel better and she relaxes and falls asleep).

thanks for your advice! Murphy seems to be unaffected by it other than it looking horrible. I examined it and there is no pain... there is a tiny bruise like area (pencil eraser) in the centre of the swelling on the inside of his lip... he has been scratching his chin lately so maybe he bruised it scratching it too hard

Ill keep an eye on it

I've yet to find a bee stinger in Bella. Usually when she gets stung she immediately rubs her face on the ground or uses her paws to scrape at her muzzle so she gets out the stinger herself. Now if my flower child would just learn to look first BEFORE she stuffs her face into a flower and ticks off some poor bee just going about it's business collecting nectar.

Hope Murph Man feels better soon. It may be bruised from him scratching at a sting or nettle scrape or just from the swelling in the area. Poor fella.

Junie B got stung or bit by something on a late night walk last year and half of her face was completely swollen...after a call to the E-vet we gave Benadryl and the swelling was gone by morning.

Skye had a swollen face for a couple of days. It gradually went down but took three days or so to completley disappear.

thanks for asking, it seems to have reduced slightly today. Still enlarged but hopefully it keeps shrinking I have to make sure he doesn't roll around rubbing his face on the rug/on the ground... he always does that rolls around on his back being silly lol
