Apprehended & ashamed

I walked into the dining room and caught Obi with his front feet up on a chair, very delicately taking the left over bread on a plate between his teeth.

He jumped down and then saw me, and he dropped the piece of bread and slunk away.

So I guess he does know right from wrong, huh?

We know he sneaks stuff, but he only does it when no one is looking. It amazes me that they have pretty complex reasoning.

I'm guessing that he was reading your reaction, rather than knowing that he was doing something wrong. LOL

Funny that he spat the piece of bread out when he saw you there.

When my kids knock over the trash, they immediately run to the hallway because they know they are in trouble. (also they pulled the whole dish rack off the counter)

Emily that's hilarious!

Likely Obi was reacting to me, though I didn't say a word. Dogs are pretty good at reading subtle body language, though.

I think our dogs do understand, to a certain degree, that resources (food) are meted out by us, and are not a free-for-all. Not that he knows right from wrong, but possibly he knows that the dining room table is not his buffet.

Actually, I think he thinks it IS his buffet if people have finished and the coast is clear.

Hehehe, at least Obi looks ashamed. Stanley looks at me like "Yeah, I did that. Wanna see how?" Dog has no shame.

Snoopy is so good at the guilty look... Most days he leaves the trash alone while we're gone but I can always tell if he got into it by how he's acting when I get home.

Chance is more like Stanley, he's just proud of himself!

Bella and Marrok never raided the kitchen garbage can until Sara came to live here. She just had to go and show them that you can push the swinging lid thingy and bingo....free buffet time. Now when we go out the garbage can gets set outside.

It was the same with us, Remi never got into the garbage till Ella came to live with us. At first we just got a can with a flip up lid but Ella figured out how to open them. Now the garbage sits on top of the deep freeze. She also played Houdini at Tina's place and opened the gate and went for a walk all by herself.
