Thu, 02 Sep 2010 07:12:13 GMTSo the doggy food delma continues...after the P&G buyout I was in the search for a new kibble from the Innova which I LOVED. After many trials I settled on the Acana and have been feeding the wild prairie for our guys. After following the directions on the back of the bag Paxton was losing weight so I contacted the company and they said to use the large breed puppy scale. I did and Pax is doing fine. While he's lanky and a bit on the thinner side he's growing nicely and I'm very happy with the results. Along comes Star. I switch her to the Acana and she starts to thin out. I attribute it to the new food and the increased exercise. I give it a bit and up her food. She's too skinny for me. While I like them on the thinner side...she's too thin for my liking.
I've ruled out any medical. She's had multiple fecals come back neg. I gave her dewormer just in case, bloodwork is great, etc,etc
She now weighs 32 pound and is up to eating 700grams(about 6 cups) of food a day(way more than a puppy her size should be eating). She has great poopies, but is still SKINNY.
I'm thinking maybe this food just isn't the best one for her. Any suggestions??

I am the main one looking into this and am not sure what would be best. We are trying to find something not carried locally that people will buy. I am worried that if we get a very expensive line that people will not buy it, but I don't want to stock crap that I don't want to support feeding. The main food I am considering is Go!/Now!. We have a pet supplies plus close to town and they carry alot of the decent food lines so picking is kinda slim.
My musts for food we carry:
Nutritional
I would feed to my own dogs
Has many varieties (grain free, grain inclusive, allergies etc., etc.)
My boss's list:
Good for working dogs (he wants foods that do not expand much when soaked)
My boss knows next to nothing about food (he feeds his dog eukanuba). He suggested Royal Canin, which most working people use.:puke:

My initial thoughts were the chicken fat was fourth on the list and I thought it had been linked to bloat in large breed dogs?? Opinions???? IMO it doesn't look that great, but she was going to try it b/c friends of hers had swore by it....

Wed, 18 Aug 2010 16:04:41 GMT"CBS News reports an egg recall is in effect for 228 million eggs produced at Wright County Egg in Galt, Iowa and sent to various retailers in America. The reason is feared salmonella contamination and cartons which have the plant numbers P-1026, P-1413, and P-1946.
If you see that, you should not eat the eggs. So if you purchased eggs under the following brands: Lucerne, Albertson, Mountain Dairy, Ralph's, Boomsma's, Sunshine, Hillandale, Trafficanda, Farm Fresh, Shoreland, Lund, Dutch Farms, and Kemps with those numbers - take them back for a refund. The distribution impacts the following states: California, Illinois, Missouri, Colorado, Nebraska, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa. Got that? Don't eat them. "

Finn got a Class 2 (Low level) for Rabbit, Oat, Milk, Potato and Barley. He scored a Class 1 (very low level) for Yeast, Pork, and Pea.
I'm trying to find him a new food that avoids all of the above. He's been having soft stools and goopey eyes, which I currently attributing to allergens. I'm going to head to our local natural pet food center tonight to see what they have to offer that might work. They carry a variety of natural foods, so I'm hoping to find something there.
Finn was 6 months old on August 5, so I'm not sure what all special considerations I need to take into account for his age. I'm assuming Cal/Phos ratio is still important at 6 months.
If anyone has any food suggestions, I would love to hear them. I would like to stick with a pre-packaged food for right now, whether that is dry, canned, freeze dried or refrigerated. My preference would be a dry food.
I've been trying a couple different foods over the last few months. He's also had parasite and bacteria in his stool, so he's been on multiple courses of Metronidazole and Panacur. A couple weeks ago he was on Tylan Powder. He's been on Flint River Ranch original, TOTW High Prairie, Grandma Lucy's Chicken (on currently) and Blue Wilderness (on currently, was trying to switch him to this to get him off Grandma Lucy's).
Thanks,
Aimee and Finn

Sun, 15 Aug 2010 19:36:02 GMTI've been buying my girls smoked bones lately from the local farmers' market as well as the local feed store. They absolutely love them! Smoked beef knuckles, pork femur bones, hollow leg bones, beef ribs, they love gnawing on them for weeks at a time even. Even after all the smoked flavor is off the bone, Zoey enjoys gnawing on them when she's bored. I always supervise them chewing on these types of bones and we've never had any problems with them. I just wanted to check and see that these types of bones are really ok? I'm reading on some internet sites that being smoked is the same as being cooked so the bones could splinter and either they shouldn't be given at all or only given to dogs that are light chewers. Yes? No? They absolutely love them but I want to be safe about it too. We only give large ones, not any that could be choking hazards either.

I feed Sofia 6 cups a day of Blue Buffalo large breed puppy food. She is 90 pounds and will eventually reach at LEAST 120. If ever again I buy Blue Buffalo I am buying regular Large Breed food, not the puppy variety. She's in great shape physically so far.
I got a 6.6 lb bag of Evo Chicken and Turkey today, along with a sample size of the red meat version, which went into Sofia's dinner tonight combined with Blue Buffalo. (Usually about 1/3 to 1/2 of her meals per week are raw btw.)
EVO RECOMMENDS 3 CUPS A DAY FOR SOFIA'S WEIGHT.
HALF!!!!!
H A L F. Can I be more blunt at what that means?
EVO doesn't actually cost more because I would have to feed her HALF the amount!!
I am going to test their recommendation for a while to see if she gains or loses anything perceptibly; if she doesn't lose weight I'm switching over.
The EVO is sold by a local dog day care/groomer/supply store, and I always want to shop local if I can.
I buy Blue Buffalo at PetCo.
Can anyone witness??? Can I get a witness?? I am kind of shell shocked.
HALF. :amazed:
I had to go on Blue Buffalo's website to double check that I wasn't misremembering.

I...I have a question, and please refrain from calling me an idiot...
I read on other threads that I should measure the kibble.
I bought a bag of Innova Adult today, and the bag says 1 cup = 8 fl oz of food.
So I measure out 8 ounces, and it is 2 measuring cups of food. That means the boys would get 6 measuring cups of kibble a day.
If the bag says 1 cup=8 fl oz, does that mean to measure to a cup, or do I weigh out 8 ounces?
